Come, Follow Me and Share the Joy build on the solid foundation of Catechism of the Catholic Church to provide a complete and doctrinally sound catechesis' for elementary children. Also important in the development of Come, Follow Me II, and Share the Joy are national docuemtns for catechesis—To Teach As Jesus Did and Sharing the Light of Faith: The National Catechetical Directory. In addition the content and methodology they follow the catechetical maifesto of Pop John Paul IIs Catechesi Tradendae from which the series has garnered the following characteristics:

It is Trinitarian in approach and Christocentric in all aspects.
It is linked with the real life of the present generation.
It speaks in language comprehensible to this generation and its children.
It proclaims the total message of Christ without distortion.
It provides those who use it with a better knowledge of the mysteries of Christ.
It aims at true conversion and a life in conformity to God's will.

Mission Statements

The mission of Come, Follow Me is to consistently and constantly extend Jesus' invitation to discipleship and to provide Catholic elementary school children with age-appropriate catechesis guided by a biblical faith, the teaching of the Church, and a clear vision of the Gospel.

This is accomplished by:

Building upon children's life experiences.
Fostering family involvement—at all levels.
Developing a personal spirituality and participation in liturgy and liturgical prayer.
Fostering Catholic literacy.
Encouraging moral development.
Challenging students to experience faith in a spirit of joy.

It is the purpose of Share the Joy to provide parishes with the very best in contemporary catechesis for elementary school children. In its development, the material has, like Come, Follow Me II, been guided by a biblical faith, a fidelity to the teachings of the Church, and a clear vision of the Gospel. It tells the story of salvation in new and effective ways.

Share the Joy is created especially for once-a-week programs of the Parish School of Religion or CCD.
It is accessible and effective for the catechetical volunteer.
It is geared to family participation at all levels.

The Ministry of Catechesis

Catechesis is an educational ministry. Those who undertake the catechetical task are ministers as well as teachers, and the whole parish—school and CCD—is charged with the supervising of this ministry. Parish catechetical ministry and CFM II share the following elements.

The parents are the first catechists. The program recognizes that it is through the parents that the faith is first handed on.
The parishioners who are called to be catechists support and extend the parents' role. Those catechists have a right to expect that a series they choose will help them fulfill that role and be formed in the Word of God.
The catechetical program in school or in the out-of-school classes makes connections between the home and the parish, between family life and parish life, between family gatherings and the Sunday Assembly.

The young people who experience these programs will meet or exceed the expectations of the Office of Religious Education for the diocese.
