Service Activities for Families: Sixth Grade
In the sixth grade your child learns about the importance of the Bible in everyday life. He or she learns from the stories of creation about the power of God and the dignity of each human being.
These activities will show children how their small efforts can help others in a big way.
- September marks the return to school and the annual chore of buying school supplies. For some families this extra expense can be a burden on their budget. Help your child organize the sixth grade class in sponsoring a school or parish bake sale. Each member of the class could work on a committee to make the event a success. The class could then give the money to the school or parish in order to assist families who may need a little help.
- In the fall, especially in November, the weather turns chilly and it becomes jacket season. However, many poor families, fixed income seniors, or homeless people do not have decent warm clothing or bedding. Your family can organize a clothing and bedding drive in the classroom or the school. Schedule the drive close to the time of Thanksgiving because people are more aware of their bounty and are more willing to share with others. Each class member should work on an organizing committee. Select a date for the drive, publicize the event and hold the collection. Distribute the items to a parish center, a local shelter, a charity center or a homeless center. This project will certainly help the students to reflect on the meaning of being thankful.
