Service Activities for Families: Eighth Grade
In the eighth grade, your child learns about being a follower of Christ as a member of the Church. We are called to share our gifts and to act in ways that build up the Kingdom of God.
These activities will show the young people how their efforts can help others.
- As a family, identify an older person in the parish or community who you can adopt as a “grandfriend.” To identify someone, check with workers at your parish office or parish outreach office, the local retirement center, nursing home, or some other facility where seniors gather. Invite the older person into your home for dinner and regularly involve him or her in appropriate family activities. Talk with the grandfriend about things that he or she likes to do and arrange to do some of these together. You might want to establish a program in the parish that encourages other families to take care of the needs of older parishioners and to reach out to them in friendship.
- In the fall around Thanksgiving before the cold weather arrives in your area, conduct a warm clothing drive for people in the parish or community who do not have decent warm clothing. Select a date for the drive, publicize the event (especially where to drop off used clothing), and hold the collection. Distribute the clothing items to a parish center, local shelter, or homeless center.
