Family Prayers and Blessings: Fall

Prayer for a New School Year
God, bless this family as we begin a new school year. Let our home be a place to learn forgiveness, compassion, cooperation and responsibility. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

A Fall Prayer
The coolness in the air and the turning of the leaves reminds us of a new season. God, we ask you to renew our spirit. Let our family actions speak the truth of your love. Let those who see us know you a little better. This we ask through your Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

All Saints
We remember that the saints were ordinary people that helped in extraordinary ways. Even though they faced many obstacles, they made changes in their lives so that they could follow Jesus. God, help us follow their example in our family life and in our contact with others. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen.

A Family Thanksgiving Prayer
Thank you, God, for the gift of our family. Be with us in our good times and in our struggles. Help us be always conscious of the love we have for each other, especially now as we reflect on the many blessings you have given us. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Family Prayers and Blessings: Winter

An Advent Prayer
Lord in heaven, increase our longing, for Christ, our Savior, and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of his coming may find us rejoicing in his presence and welcoming the light of his truth. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.
Amen!

A Prayer for Lighting the Advent Wreath
Lord our God,
We praise you for your son Jesus Christ:
he is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,
he is wisdom that teaches and guides us,
he is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God,
Let your blessing come upon us
as we light the candle on this wreath.
Make our Light be a sign of Christ’s promise
May he come quickly and not delay.
We ask through Christ our Lord.
Amen!

Signs of Faith
Here is a simple ritual you can use for blessing your Christmas tree. You can do this right after your family has finished decorating the tree.

  1. Keep the tree dark and gather around the tree.
  2. Play or sing and Advent song or a favorite Christmas carol.
  3. The oldest child then reads Psalm 96:11-13
  4. Pray for a moment in silence, and then take turns asking God’s blessing on the members of the family.
