What is My Child Learning?: Second Grade

Unit 1

Chapter 1 God's World
Your child is being reminded that God created the world, and everything in it, out of love and filled it with goodness. As human beings, we are God's most precious creation. Each of us is made in God's image and likeness. Your child is being invited to use the gifts God has given him or her to show goodness everyday through words and actions. What are some of your gifts? How do your gifts reflect the presence of God in your life?

Chapter 2 God's Son
Your child is learning that Jesus, the Son of God, is one with God the Father and was sent to model God's love. Your child is hearing about the human aspects of Jesus in order to help discover ways to model him. We are learning about Jesus and God through Bible stories (The Prodigal Son — Luke 15: 11-32, The Good Samaritan — Luke 10: 25-36, Jesus heals the man born blind — John 9, Jesus feeds the hungry — Matthew 15: 32-38). Jesus was sent to show God's love to everyone. Jesus, the image of the invisible God, reveals God again and again in these Gospel passages. What do you learn about who God is when you study the stories of Jesus? What can you do this week to follow Jesus' example?

Chapter 3 God's Word
Your child is learning that the Bible is the Word of God and that in the Bible we come to know God and how God wants us to live. Your child is also learning about Jesus through the stories he told and the stories his followers told about him. Remembering these stories and what Jesus said and did to show God's love is a way that your child can become rooted in faithfully living the Christian life. Which scripture stories are your favorites?

Chapter 4 God's Children
Your child is focusing on the love God shows in Baptism and on belonging to God's family. God is our "heavenly Father." It is through Baptism that our sins are forgiven and we become children of God, receiving God's grace. Your child is learning that Baptism is an important sacrament that changes our lives. Water, oil, and light are sacramental signs used at Baptism to help express God's grace. Your baptism brought you into the family of God. What does this mean to you today?
